Rent Board Notice Regarding COVID-19
The Rent Board continues to monitor the ongoing situation regarding COVID-19 (Coronavirus Pandemic). Pursuant to the Declaration of Local Health Emergency Regarding Novel Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the Order of the Health Office No. C19-05b (revised) of March 13, 2020, aggressive recommendations have been issued to slow or reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus. With the health and safety of the community in mind, the Rent Board will be implementing the following changes to its ordinary procedures:
- Immediate closure of the Rent Board’s front counter service.
- Administrative postponement of some hearings and mediations.
- Cancellation of board meetings.
Phone counseling will continue to be available at (415) 252-4631 during regular hours: Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Hearings and Mediations
All hearings and mediations scheduled through April 17th, 2020 have been postponed until further notice. Parties will receive notice of the rescheduled hearing or mediation date in the mail.
Due to the Rent Board’s office closure, no in-person hearings or mediations are being conducted or scheduled at this time. However, beginning in May of 2020, we have begun scheduling a limited number of cases for hearing or mediation through remote conferencing using Microsoft Teams.
If you are a party to a pending petition and would like your case scheduled for a remote hearing, please provide the Rent Board (preferably by email at email@example.com) with your email address and the email address of any other participants (attorneys, representatives, witnesses) who wish to appear. Your email should include (a) your name, (b) your address, (c) your phone number, and (d) the Rent Board case number, if known.
Please note that only a limited number of cases are being scheduled for a remote hearing at this time. Certain petitions may not be appropriate for a remote hearing due to the complexity of the issues, the number of parties involved, or because some participants may face technological obstacles to presenting their case.
For more information regarding the Rent Board’s Temporary Remote Hearing Procedures, please refer to the following document.
The March 17, 2020 regular commission meeting, (together with the scheduled public hearing) and the April 14, 2020 regular commission meeting have been cancelled. The Rent Board's next regular commission meeting will be held on May 12, 2020 at 6pm via web conference. Meeting participation information will be posted on the Rent Board's website no later than 72 hours before the meeting. The agenda and remote meeting access information can be found here. The meeting is best viewed using Google Chrome or Firefox.
Please check the website periodically for updates. We thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
